Glossary of Heideggerian Terms

  • Dasein: (Being-there) – The human being as the entity that questions its own existence.
  • In-der-Welt-sein: (Being-in-the-world) – The fundamental way Dasein exists: always already involved in a world.
  • Weltlichkeit: (Worldhood) – The structure of the world as it is experienced by Dasein.
  • Zuhandenheit: (Readiness-to-hand) – The way tools or things are encountered as useful, seamlessly integrated into activity.
  • Bedeutsamkeit: (Significance) – The network of meanings and relevance that things have in a context.
  • Vorhandenheit: (Presence-at-hand) – The way things are encountered as mere objects, especially when they break down.
  • Mitsein: (Being-with) – The social aspect of Dasein: always already with others.
  • Fürsorge: (Solicitude/Care-for-others) – The way Dasein relates to and cares for others.
  • das Man: (The They) – The anonymous social norms and conventions that shape everyday existence.
